A Homeschool Lesson Must Look Different from a Classroom Lesson

Singapore’s approach to math is amazing for so many reasons, but it's designed to be used in a classroom.  Students are meant to discuss and work together collaboratively while building understanding.

In order to replicate its success in the homeschool setting, it HAS to look different.

Home Instructor Guides are a great starting point to help parents see how the lesson looks with one student.  But there’s more to consider to make the Singapore approach truly work:

How does my lesson look to encourage conversation?

How do I manage hands-on activities?

How do I complete a 45 minute lesson in 20 minutes?

How do I work with multiple students?

The Answer: Create an actual lesson just for homeschool families.

The 4C Math Mastery Model

The 4C Math Mastery Model for Homeschool Success breaks a homeschool lesson into 20 minutes of teacher time to focus on the effective parts of a Singapore lesson.

Connect

Spend 5 minutes connecting prior knowledge with an opening question and rich task for problem-solving.

Communicate

Take 5 minutes to discuss the objective and zero in on what should be taught during the lesson.

Collaborate

Go deep into a concept by exploring mathematical and perceptual variation.  THIS is what separates a Singapore curriculum from the others!

Comprehend

Finish strong with independent practice that even allows you to work with another student at the same time.

This course is everything you need to know to teach Singapore Math in a way that makes it easy to understand. I loved being able to watch demos of each aspect of the lesson and now have a greater understanding of how to go through each part of the lesson and the importance of not skipping parts. It took all of the overwhelm away and I can’t wait to start our next math books!

I absolutely love the ‘seeing it in Action’. When I came to that part of the class, my eyes lit up. The ability to read through your excellent explanations was helpful, but to see it implemented in more depth was phenomenal!
